Motorway Driving — What Learners Need to Know

Learner drivers have been allowed on UK motorways since June 2018 — but only in a dual-control car with an approved driving instructor, never in an ordinary car with a friend or family member supervising. Motorways have their own rules and hazards that don't come up on ordinary roads, so it's worth understanding them before you're actually on one.

Lane discipline

Keep left unless you're overtaking. This sounds obvious, but "middle lane hogging" — sitting in the middle lane on a three-lane motorway regardless of traffic in the left lane — is genuinely illegal, not just inconsiderate, and carries a penalty of £100 and 3 points.

Smart motorways and the red X

On smart motorways, a red X displayed above a lane means that lane is closed — usually because of a broken-down vehicle, debris, or an incident ahead. Driving in a lane marked with a red X is illegal and carries the same £100 and 3-point penalty as middle lane hogging. Cameras actively enforce this, so it's not a rule that goes unnoticed if broken.

If you break down on a motorway

This is the scenario worth genuinely preparing for mentally before it happens, because panic makes bad decisions more likely. If you can, get to the hard shoulder or, on an all-lane-running smart motorway, the nearest emergency refuge area. Once stopped, exit the vehicle via the left-hand doors only, and stand behind the safety barrier if there is one — never wait inside or immediately next to the car. Call 999 or National Highways rather than just a breakdown recovery service, since they need to know a vehicle is stationary in a live traffic area.

If you're unable to reach a hard shoulder or refuge area and become stuck in a live lane — which is rare but does happen — keep your seatbelt on and call 999 immediately rather than attempting to exit the vehicle in moving traffic.

Following distance at motorway speeds

The standard guidance is at least a 2-second gap in dry conditions, doubling to 4 seconds when wet, and 10 seconds on ice. At 70mph, a 2-second gap works out to roughly 63–96 metres — considerably further than most drivers instinctively leave, especially before they've driven at motorway speeds much.

Sat nav and wrong turns

If your test includes independent driving following a sat nav and you take a wrong turn as a result, it is explicitly not marked as a fault by examiners — DVSA supplies the sat nav for this section of the test, and following it correctly (even to an unintended destination) isn't penalised.
