This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, which ones ukworkrights.co.uk uses, and how you can manage them. We aim to be transparent about our use of cookies and comply with the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and UK GDPR.
1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work and to give information to the website owner. Cookies cannot run programs or deliver viruses to your device.
Websites can also save small pieces of information in your browser’s own storage, called local storage. The same rules apply to it as to cookies, so we list both below.
2. Cookies and Browser Storage We Use
Used without asking, because the site needs them or you asked for them
- Your cookie choice — if you answer our own cookie banner, your Accept or Reject choice is saved in your browser so we do not ask on every page. Provider: UK Work Rights. Kept until you change it or clear your browser data.
- Settings you choose — the UK nation you pick, dark mode, whether you have closed the site notice banner, and your thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating of each checker (so you only count once and can change it). Provider: UK Work Rights. Kept in your browser until you clear it.
- Signing in — only if you choose to sign in. Your name, email address and “stay logged in” choice are saved in your browser so the site remembers you. Provider: UK Work Rights. Removed when you sign out.
- Site usage codes — two small codes that let us see basic, anonymous statistics about how the site is used: which page you're on and roughly where visits came from (for example, Google or Facebook). Neither is a tracking cookie, neither identifies you, and neither is shared with anyone. Provider: UK Work Rights. One is kept only for your current browser tab and deleted the moment you close it; the other is automatically forgotten by our system after about two minutes of inactivity.
Not stored on your device
- Rate limiting — to keep the checkers free, we count how many checks come from each internet connection. The count is held on our provider’s servers against your IP address, not on your device. Provider: Upstash. Deleted automatically after 25 hours.
Used only if you accept
- Analytics — helps us understand how visitors use the site. Provider: Google Analytics. Duration: up to 2 years.
- Advertising — used to show advertising. Provider: Journey by Mediavine. Duration: up to 2 years.
- Advertising measurement — tells us whether our own adverts lead people to use the checkers. Provider: Google Ads. Duration: as set by Google.
Services from other companies that load on our pages
- Sign in with Google — the sign-in button is provided by Google, and Google’s code loads on most pages so the button works. Google may set its own cookies. We only receive your name and email address if you sign in with Google to post a comment.
- Google site search — the search box on our search page is provided by Google, which may set its own cookies when you use it.
We do not take payments on this site. Donations are handled entirely by Buy Me a Coffee on their own platform, and we hold no payment data.
3. How Consent Works
Analytics and advertising cookies are denied by default. They only load if you accept them. This is required by regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003, which allows non-essential cookies only with your prior consent. The only items used without asking are those listed above as needed for the site to work or requested by you, which the regulations allow.
When you first visit, the Mediavine Consent Management Platform asks for your choice. It is certified under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. If it does not appear within a few seconds, our own banner asks instead, with Accept and Reject given equal weight. Either way, your decision controls Mediavine’s advertising cookies, Google Analytics and Google Ads.
To change your choice at any time, use the Update Privacy Settings link in the footer, or the button below.
4. Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to collect usage statistics including pages visited, how you arrived at the site, general geographic location at country and region level, and device type. Google Analytics does not store your IP address, and we do not use Analytics to identify individuals.
Analytics only runs if you have accepted analytics cookies. You can also opt out across all websites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
5. Journey by Mediavine
We display advertising provided by Journey by Mediavine, which may use cookies to show interest-based advertising based on your previous visits to this and other websites.
Advertising only runs if you have accepted advertising cookies. Opting out does not remove advertising — it means the ads you see will not be tailored to your interests.
You can also opt out through the Digital Advertising Alliance, the Network Advertising Initiative, or Your Online Choices.
6. Managing Cookies in Your Browser
- Google Chrome — Settings → Privacy and Security → Third-party cookies
- Mozilla Firefox — Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Safari — Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Microsoft Edge — Settings → Cookies and site permissions
Disabling cookies may affect the functionality of this and many other websites.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in technology, regulation or our practices. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when changes are made.
