What Is a MATB1 Form, and Why Does It Matter?
A plain English look at the one piece of paperwork your maternity pay actually depends on.

If you're pregnant and planning your maternity leave, you'll come across the term "MATB1 form" pretty quickly — but a lot of people aren't told exactly what it is, when to get it, or what happens if it goes missing.
What it actually is
A MATB1 is an official certificate confirming your pregnancy and expected due date. Your midwife or doctor issues it, usually from around 20 weeks before your due date. It's not optional paperwork — it's the document your employer needs to actually process your Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP).
Why it matters
No MATB1, no SMP. Employers are entitled to ask for it before they start paying you, and if you don't provide one, they can legally withhold payment until you do. It's one of the few genuinely non-negotiable steps in the whole process — everything else (your notice letter, your start date) can usually be worked around, but this document has to exist.
When to get it
You can request it from your midwife or GP any time after 20 weeks pregnant. Don't leave it until the last minute — if you're aiming to start maternity leave 11 weeks before your due date (the earliest point you're allowed to), you'll want the MATB1 in your employer's hands well before then, ideally alongside your written notice.
What to do with it
Give the original (or a copy, depending on what your employer asks for) directly to your employer — not just to HR informally over email without confirmation it's been received. Keep a copy for yourself. If your employer says they haven't received it, you want to be able to prove you sent it.
If something goes wrong
Lost paperwork, slow HR processing, or an employer dragging their feet on confirming receipt are common hiccups. If your SMP is delayed or refused despite you providing a valid MATB1 on time, that's a rights issue, not just an admin one — and it's worth checking where you stand.
Our free Maternity Rights Checker walks through your SMP eligibility step by step, and our letter templates include a ready-to-send notice covering your MATB1 submission and leave dates — so you're not starting that conversation with your employer from scratch.
