You may be entitled to a council tax discount, exemption or band reduction. Describe your situation and get instant guidance on what you could be entitled to.
↓ Try the Checker NowSingle occupants are entitled to a 25% council tax discount. Full-time students living alone are fully exempt. People with severe mental impairment are disregarded for billing purposes.
Council tax bands are based on 1991 property values. You can appeal your band via the Valuation Office Agency — but be aware a review can move your band up as well as down.
Key areas covered: single person discount, student exemption, disabled reduction, council tax support, band appeal, VOA. Checked against official sources.
The 25% single person discount and various exemptions aren't applied automatically in most cases — they generally need to be actively claimed, and councils can often backdate a discount once you notify them, though policies on how far back they'll go vary between local authorities.
Before formally challenging your council tax band with the Valuation Office Agency, check comparable neighbouring properties' bands first — a formal challenge can result in your band moving up as well as down if the review concludes your existing band was too low, so it's worth being reasonably confident in your case first.

Can I get a discount if I live alone?
A household with only one adult resident may get a 25% discount, in England, Wales and Scotland. Some people are not counted as adults for council tax. Northern Ireland has domestic rates instead of council tax.
Can I pay less council tax if I am disabled?
In England you may pay at the rate for the band below yours if you have an extra bathroom, kitchen or other room that you need for a disabled person who lives with you, or extra space inside the property for using a wheelchair. Wales and Scotland have their own schemes: the checker uses the guide for your nation.
What should I do if I cannot pay my council tax?
Contact your council as soon as you can and ask about Council Tax Reduction, which helps people on low incomes. For arrears, court action and enforcement agents, ask Citizens Advice or a free debt adviser.
